Dental Implants in West Palm Beach | The Standard Procedure for Dental Implants

A dental implant is a biocompatible structure embedded in the jawbone. They are used to support false teeth such as dentures, dental bridges or crowns. Dental implants in West Palm Beach help reduce bone resorption, preserve the thickness of the jawbone, increase the stability of full mouth dentures and improves the functions on chewing and speaking.

Procedures for Dental Implant Placement

Placing dental implants involves oral surgery and takes a lot of time for the healing period to complete. This is what goes on during dental implant placement:

  • Thorough Examination – a detailed oral examination is required such as an X-ray examination and CT scan to determine the position and angulations to place the implants. This is also to determine if the patient is suitable for the procedure.
  • Surgery – the gum flap is raised, and a hole is drilled into the jawbone at the pre-determined position and angulation. The dental implants are then inserted into the hole and the gum flap is closed by sutures. The waiting period for osseointegration to complete is 3-6 months. After this time frame, a second surgery will be performed to remove a small piece of gum covering the dental implant and a healing component is then inserted into the dental implants. This will allow the gums to heal properly around the implants.
  • False Teeth Fitting – when the gums around the implant are completely healed, the healing component will be replaced by an impression component. Impressions of the dental arches will be taken, and the impression component transfers the position and the angulations of the dental implant to the dental impression. The impression will then be sent to a dental lab for fabrication of the false teeth (crown). When the replacement teeth are ready, the false teeth will then be placed onto the dental implants.
